Fun Sewing and a Free Bird

This weekend I started paper piecing these blocks to make a kitchen shelf quilt. The mixer is my pattern ~ free here, the teapot is a PDF from piece by number, and the rest are from Maaike Bakker's Cups and Saucers book. I forgot how much I love paper piecing, especially with yummy fabric!

I made this little quilt last week. I like to call it Free Bird, in celebration of Independence Day (coming up next month). After making it I thought it still needed a little something, but it's simplicity has grown on me and I rather like it this way.

Hope you are having some sewing fun!
xo Erin

Love the little Free Bird - so cute - and the paper pieced blocks are terrific. Can't wait to see that all together. Well done!

Nice! Have to admit, I thought you were giving away the bird quilt ('free' bird...get it?) :) Very very cute, it's nice to see your little birdies making a reappearance!

I just love your bird mini-quilts! They're just full of sweet personalities. Love the paper piecing, too. I wouldn't have thought they were pulled from different sources since they look so natural together. Can't wait to see more!

Your paper piecing skills are outstanding! Love the colors and fabrics you chose. I have the cups and saucers book and haven't used it yet. You may have inspired me… :)

I looked at craftsy and I didn't see any classes for paper piecing like this. I'm not interested in learning to do a sunflower or anything else. I want to make things like this. Super cute.

I know I already replied tp most of you :) and Thank you to those who commented that are no-reply. I just wanted to add here what I mentioned to Nanette.
I love to pp this way. I feel like I don't waste as much fabric also. The Cups and Saucers book I mentioned is really a great start. I got it a few years ago from Amazon for $3 and some change. Also Ayumi @ Pink Penguin has a cute paper pieced tea pot that uses this same method. Also check out Charise Creates, Amy @ During Quiet Time, Kerry of VeryKerryBerry, Penny of Sew Take a Hike. They all have really great paper pieced patterns available.

Free Bird is wonderful. Perhaps the little something you are looking for could be done in the quilting of it.

You should enter your free bird into the Modern Mini Challenge, a similar mug rug one it last year.
