No Scrap Left Behind Blog Tour and Giveaway

Good morning! I'm so happy and honored to be a part of the blog tour for my friend Amanda Jean Nyberg's (Crazy Mom Quilts) new book No Scrap Left Behind. The book is full of quilts and projects that use all sizes of scraps. Down to the last little bits.

I am such a fan of Amanda Jean's quilts! All of the projects in the book are great. I decided on making Mini Nines.

I love the size of these nine patch blocks! I used some of my smallest scraps for this project and it was so rewarding!

I turned my Mini Nines into a pillow for my youngest girl. I added a little pom pom trim to the edges.

Those little nine patches are adorable! The individual squares measure 1/2 inch!!! The book has great tips for accuracy and how to make these tiny blocks easily.

I would love to make a larger version of the pattern. Maybe a long term scrap project the way Amanda Jean tackled it in the book. These blocks are perfect for scrap busting.

Since Amanda Jean is the queen of awesome pieced quilt backs I thought I would make a cute back for this pillow using my leftover blocks. I love how it turned out and I had so much fun with this project. It always feels good to use up some scraps.

We are sharing some tips for scrap organization and usage on this tour which I am always interested in hearing how others work their scraps. My system is always changing. I have such limited space. I went through my scraps a while ago and gave a lot away to my mom. Then I took everything and organized it by color into small rectangular containers. I organized it further by keeping larger pieces on one side of the container, strips in the middle and squares that are already a specific size on the other side. I have a smaller basket I keep my Japanese fabric in because I use them in a lot of small projects and they tend to be my favorites. I also always keep a basket next to my work area and that's where I put my scraps for my current project to be organized later. It usually takes a few projects before it's full and needs put away. So, that's how I take care of my scraps.

To win a copy of No Scrap Left Behind leave a comment here. If you have an scrap organizing tips you love you can leave them below or just say hi! That's fine too :)

Absolutely cute to the nth power! The pom pom trim is the perfect finish! I am going to Pin this so I don't forget how cute it would be in a some-day granddaughter's room!

I bought white baskets from the $Tree and sort my scraps by colors and themes. Red, orange, yellow, green/aqua/mint, blue and indigo, pink, purple, white/off white, black/black&white, Christmas, florals, baby/nursery, and novelty prints for an I-spy quilt. One of my lqs has a bin of scraps, everything you can stuff into a sandwich zippy bag for $1, it a favorite way of mine to kill some time while in town between appointments.

Your pillow is just too sweet! I just started quilting last year-so no great tips here, however, I do keep my smaller left-over scraps in clear zip-lock bags, sorted by color. Larger scraps In a small covered bin. Thank you, Susan

I too love using up scraps but just don't get around to it often enough - This book would be fantastic! Adorable pillow!

Need to get to reorganizing scraps again; not enough organized now.....Love the 9 patch block and making the pillow is just perfect!

Quilter Beth said...

The book looks great! I'm sure I could put it to good use with all the scraps I have.

I love the way you used scraps in your pillows. They are always accumulating so I alway looks for ways to use them up.

I "try" to cut my scraps into useable sizes, i.e. 1 1/2",2",2 1/2", up to 3" squares or strips "before" putting them in my scrap bag....doesn't always happen, but I was just sorting them the other day and I was happy to find many precut squares and strips! Seems to save time in the end.

Those tiny nine-patches make me squeal!
Love keeping my tiniest scraps in a jar.
The colors make me smile.
Would love to win Amanda's book.

I don't really have any great scrap organizing tips. But I absolutely love your pillow! It looks great!

What a cheerful, sweet pillow! Lucky girl!

I collect antique enamelware and have them all over the house. Some of them have been great for organizing all my 30s scraps and fat quarters, threads, notions, Halloween fabrics, etc. More attractive than bags.

That is so cute and the pom pom border is perfect! I'd love to try the tiny piecing but I'm not sure I have that many years left to finish something with such tiny blocks! You young'uns still have all the time in the world. I'm putting my tiny scraps into dog beds!

Aileen said...

Your pillow is lovely. Right now I have an entire tub to cut up into Bonnie K Hunters scrap system. I couldn't keep up this year. Christmas crafting was mind blowing. Time to get the grand kids to sort colors for me!!!

Kathy H said...

Beautiful pillow. Such cheerful colors.i just bought a small drawer organizer to try and color code my scraps.

Mom C said...

I try to sort by color, most of my good fabric scraps are pretty small. I feel so virtuous when I make scrap quilts, like I'm making something out of nothing. I love it. Thanks.

Lisa England said...

I love scrap quilts and use my scraps often, but still they multiply! I admire people whose scraps are neatly organized, but sadly I am not one of those people.

Meredith Bailey said...

This book has some fab ideas for scrap quilts. Interesting designs and nothing hard to sew.

Love learning how others deal with their scraps. This book might help me become a bit more organized or at least clean out some of my scraps!

Love the pillow, Erin. This would be a great idea for my two granddaughters!

for spring or anytime...

No scrap sorting method to share, but do like reading what others do - someday I need to start sorting!

Loose Threads said...

Just purchased your book Sweet Tweets!!! Can't wait to get started. I have a bin I use to put left over fabric in while quilting and once it is full (which it is right now) I sort through and make 2 1/2" squares - 10" squares and strips for strip quilting - I have bins for each size. This system works for me. Love how your pillow turned out - maybe need to save even smaller scraps now!!!

Catholic Bibliophagist said...

Hmmm. I already have a bunch of mini 9-patches. What a good idea for using them.

Rowsella said...

Quite a noble project, to sew without waste. I do really like your mini 9's. The pillows came out very nice. Thank you for your blog post and give away.

Love that picture of the pillow in the chair, so cute! Amanda's stuff is the best. Thanks for the chance to win!

I sort my scraps by color but nothing special other than that.

Barb said...

Would love this book as scrap quilts are my favorites!

Susan said...

Scraps, no method to maintain them. Tossing them all out OK giving away and going to start over. Going to cut and sort as I go instead of wading them up in large totes

Kathleen said...

Your pillow is the sweetest! The pom-pom trim really makes it. I don't have a scrap organizing tip but I do save practically every little piece. Even the thin strips from trimming a fat quarter to get an even side. Those thin pieces end up on gifts as ribbons and bows. My kids laugh every time they find a piece of my fabric on their gifts!
Thanks for the opportunity to win!

what a fun pillow. i sort scraps by color too! It's been helpful when making swap blocks or looking for small pieces to know I can easily look through what i need.

Debbie said...

Love the pillow-great color and the pompoms were the cherry on top! When my scraps start to pile up, I pick a 6 1/2 inch simple block and start cutting out and making the blocks. I also pick an English Paper Piecing project for my carry along box and pin and cut those pieces.
I also have a long term crazy patch project for all my favorite scraps.

I love scrappy quilts. I cut my scraps down to 1 1/2", so I can do these mini nine patches. I like your colors.

It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful a simple shape can be. This quilt pattern is a perfect example of this. Definitely would like to make this in the near future.

Lizbet said...

Hi,. You confirmed my love for the mini nines. I keep scraps in in bags by person for whom I sewed in case I want to make a quilt of these memories.

MMorton said...

Cute quilt. I would have to enlarge the blocks, though. Half-inch squares are too small for me!

Shauna said...

Your pillow is awesome. I tend to keep larger scraps together by color and then everything else in a big bin. I don't like the system, so I wouldn't recommend it. But it works for now.

Unknown said...

I need some scrap organization inspiration! Hoping this book fits the bill

Gloria said...

I think that I need to sort my scraps better so I can start using them more effectively.

Lovely cushion!

Indianna said...

Lovely mini patchwork. I sort my scraps by colour into clear plastic bags. If I can't see what I need then I usually end up tipping them all over the floor so it's not an ideal solution!

Unknown said...

Your pillow is so cute! I love your use of the tiny scraps! Such inspiration! I shove all my scraps in to boxes with no sorting, then have fun/frustration trying to find the right piece! As long as it's sewing, it doesn't matter:)

I love the pom pom trim! It looks amazing! Thanks for the chance to win!

Those pillows are adorable - and their scrappy backs! i would have the patience for pillows or placemats for this project, so to see your results is heartening. i also love the pom-pom edges (we used to call this trim "bongo balls" in the 1960s lol!)

Great pillow! My scrap stash is still small, so I love seeing organizational tips on the blog tour that I can use in the future. Thanks for the chance to win!

Just saying hello. I don't have any different storage tips than what others have already said.
Thanks for the chance to win this book!

Love the mini nine patch pillow! I'm like a lot of people, I have my scraps sorted by color in plastic shoeboxes. I'm thinking about cutting my scraps into different size squares but would I still have to sort by colors or hues or patterns?! Maybe I should just make a crazy quilt out of my scraps! Thanks for the chance to win Amanda Jean's wonderful book!

anna said...

cute little nines, love the pom pom accent

margaret said...

I store my scraps in plastic totes. I cut 1 1/2" up to 6" and keep them seperate. When i was working with my 1 1/2" squares i strung them on thread to keep them from getting wrinkeled.

Anne said...

What a cute pillow!
I really need that book... I need something to justify my saving every tiny scrap of fabric for the last 20 years! ;)

janequiltsslowly said...

Those mini 9-patches are calling to me! Love the pillow and the pom pom trim! I keep a big bin of scraps next to my sewing table at all times. When it gets too full I sort and cut them down into specific sizes using Bonnie Hunter's scrap users system. I haven't done that in quite awhile so I may need to have a cutting afternoon soon!

Cori said...

I use plastic containers to sort the scraps by sizes and cut the fabric into 1/2, 11/2. 2 in squares and 1, 11/2, 2 in strips,

Craig and Liz said...

Tiny block are just so darn cute. I am currently cutting small scraps into 2" and 2 1/2" squares. I'm making pixelated pictures with the square with my grand daughters. they love the process.

mtquilter said...

I have no scrap organization other than than throwing them in a huge bin. That's not very helpful when I have to dig through it looking for a particular color. I confess I just hate taking the time to organize! I'd rather sew. I now have 3 overflowing bins so I guess I need to do something to organize my mess. Maybe if I win a copy of the book I'll get inspired! ;) Thanks for the chance!

Such a tiny block! Love your pillow and love Amanda Jean. She is very inspiring. My stash is generally sorted by colour but alas my scraps are a mess at the moment all jumbled together in a box or two.
