Great fabrics. My mom taught me to sew when I was a child. I taught myself to quilt in 1999 and have been doing that ever since. Now I'm teaching my niece.

love this fabric selection! i started sewing in college as a way to soothe my mind. my childhood babysitter sewed EVERYTHING--clothes, quilts, rugs, everything. when i started sewing i realized that i had probably absorbed something from my babysitter. it felt like i was coming home :)

I was stalking Emilie Ahern's blog and she mentioned the 1 million pillowcase challenge...I don't know how it rolled from her to all these blogs I religiously stalk everyday but found some really good blogs with great tutorials so I'm working on a quilt right now that was a tutorial on the Moda Bake Shop called charity crosses. My grandma instilled in me my love for sewing and all things crafty. we lived down the street from her so I spent alot of time at my grandparents house. i would help her lay out quilts for her quilting group at church. I remember that she got me this cool kids sewing machine that sewed yarn into paper.

Like a few others on this comment thread, i too was taught by my mom. my grandmothers mainly knitted, but my mom had a fascination with quilts so thats what stuck with me.
My mom used to sew when I was little and I remember getting a sewing machine when I was 5. I guess I dabbled at it for a while then in high school I took Home Ec and continued to sew. For my Grade 12 graduation in 93 my grandparents bought me a sewing machine. My sewing tapered off for a while but once I became a mama I started again and just love it!
Hi - I was taught sewing by my mother, grand and great grandmother who all sewed and quilted and did other hand work. Fun! Taught my daughter and we do it together.

Hi! Great giveaway. I have "learned" to sew three times. First my grandmother (the perfectionist began (and quickly gave up) teaching me all the "womanly crafts" when I was four or five. Then around twelve I taught myself the sewing machine and enrolled in home ec. I made some clothes, but then I was a teenager, and too busy. Finally, around maybe six years ago, I picked up all those crafts again, and had to relearn sewing. I think I'm pretty good with the basics., but I would love more time to practice.

Your fabrics are just lovely. I got interested in quilting when I was working as a student nurse in a psychiatric hospital (not the sort of thing you tell too many people!) I noticed that with a little patchwork, you could not only encourage the patients to do something creative for themselves, but it brightened up the day for everyone!
I HATED sewing at school, because I was forced to do it, when I really wanted to be doing computing and woodwork. But now that I have my own kids, the desire to learn from my grandmothers (and my husbands gran, who smocks beautifully), and be able to creat beautiful, unique clothes and gifts, is really important to me!

my mom just taught me to sew last year and now i'm learning to quilt from books and the internet. at this time a year ago i was terrified of my sewing machine. i thought the needle would eat my fingers.
I really didn't feel like I had a choice to be a quilter. When I was younger my mom taught me and I would make a wall-hanging or something else every year for 4-H for the county fair. I liked it sometimes and hated it other times. I would also make a garment and it usually brought me to tears at least once during the process!!
Then I learned how to knit... finally 7 years later I finished a sweater.
Anyway, long story short, after several years of thinking I'd be completely happy to never quilt again and just knit baby socks (small, much quicker to finish than a sweater!!) my friend posted a link to fabricworm on facebook after I had just joined. I went there... and suddenly was hooked. This was 7 months ago. I've made a quilted pillow for a friend's baby, and three projects over my spring break (I'm a college professor) and last week, when I should have been writing final exams - all I could think about was what quilt I was going to make this summer! yikes! I have the bug! But really, it's in my genes. My mom quilts, my grandma quilts and my other grandma sewed and knitted. :)

How I got started sewing: My first love is knitting, but one day I was surfing along on the internet and I noticed how much faster sewing seemed, and how adorable the cheery prints all were. So I kept looking and wishing I could sew and one day my mom gave me her old sewing machine! I started going to my local quilt shop for help, but for the most part I learned from blogs and books. That was it, I was hooked!

Hi, thanks for the giveaway! I started sewing because my boyfriend and I bought our first house last year and I wanted to have tons and tons of throw pillows for the new big white couch. I found out that all the pillow covers I loved were ridiculously pricey (over $200), so I bought a sewing machine and taught myself how to sew! I've since started quilting too and I love it!

My sister and I made baby quilts for two friends about 10 years ago... it was the blind leading the blind.... we even had a system of one of us holding the fabric while the other applied the seam ripper! But we had fun!

I babysat years ago for a woman who was taking a beginner's quilting course. Around the same time I visited my cousin who lives near a Mennonite community. I was entranced and have been ever since.

When I was four or five my grandmother, who was a curtain maker, let me start sewing (by hand) with her scraps. We made dolls, little clothes and even fun bags together. By the time I was 10, I was too cool to sew with Grandma anymore, but at 21 I decided to start costume making and use the skills my grandmother had taught me so long ago. Now I am addicted to quilting!

How I learned to sew: My dad said, "Every girl should know how to sew." and he gave me a Bernina 830.
I was offended at first.
The Bernina collected dust.
I figured I should know how to work the damn thing and took a lesson at my local quilting shop.
Turns out, I'm a natural at making clothes and folloing a pattern.
Go figure!

im not really sure what got me started in sewing. my mom says even as a kid i was always crazy about it, and was always begging to sew. no one knew why...i'm an enigma!
I'd made garments, dolls and all sorts of other things so in 1994 after trying to make a quilt without instructions, I purchased a quilt book and have been quilting ever since.

my mom bought me a sewing machine. it was a big deal as she did not have a lot of money. although i really wanted to sew, i didn't know how and had no grandmothers living anymore to teach me (mom doesn't sew). then my daughter needed a halloween costume and i knew just what i wanted to make. i broke out my machine and made it happen! then i found all these wonderful blogs and sewing sites and all the free tutorials out there. i have basically learned to sew (and other crafts) from the internet! crazy world.
I am self taught (not counting 7th grade home ec. when I made an apron). I have always had an "I can make that" philosophy when shopping and decided I wanted to learn to make tote bags etc. I also wanted to be able to hem my own pants, rather than paying someone 15 bucks a pair.
Thank you for the chance! Our local quilt shop owner got me started. I'm a cross stitcher and she carried threads I loved to use. Every time I went in she threatened to turn me into a quilter. And I laughed. Now I cringe when I think of the wasted time when I could have been buying fabric!

I became interested after shopping at a handmade market once for beads and stuff. I saw some fat quarters, bought them, and my sister asked, "What are you going to do with them?" "Um...make things!" I replied. I had no idea how to sew then (this was 1.5 yrs ago). I started learning by teaching myself from internet tutorials and books from the library. And I'm still learning all the time. :D

My mother taught me as a child and then gave me a sewing machine for my college graduation. Since then, I've been using trial and error and loving it! I feel so creative!

My husband gave me a sewing machine a couple years ago for Christmas after I mentioned to him I wanted to learn to sew. I had no idea what to do with it or how to use it though! I started quilting after seeing a friend make a beautiful quilt for her daughter's first birthday. Thankfully with the internet I've been able to teach myself a lot!

Love these fabrics, thanks for the chance to win! I've been sewing since I was a kid, but started officially quilting when my mom and I took a course when I was a teen. I was (by several decades) the youngest person in the class, and was choosing much more modern fabrics. All the older women in the class tended to look at me sideways and make comments like "oh, look at your bold, crisp colours, you must be making that quilt for a man." Um, no. I still laugh about that today :-)

My grandmother used to quilt, no in the way we do that now, she wasn't even close to "Amish" I mean rustique, I always admired quilting since I was a child, but I didn't give it a try because I was scared to sewing machines, LOL, silly isn't it?, well now I love to quilt, I'm not a sewing machine specialist, but now I can sew in it at least!

I took a one-hour class about a year ago called "how to operate your sewing machine" - I was SO intimidated by a sewing machine, but was always curious. for years! I knew how to sew a button, etc. But WOW. It's like a whole world of creativity has opened up! I've been designing jewelry for 13 years, and had started transitioning into metalsmithing a few years ago - and now I must admit, everytime I go to my studio (ahem, the basement) I walk right past my jewelry workshop into the sewing area. I'm hooked!! :)

I started on my own, I wanted to make pillows with applique on them. At the time I didn't even consider it quilting. Loved the creative outlet and started looking at more traditional quilting.
I learned to sew in Home ec in junior high school
Now you know I am old - - girls don't have to take home ec anymore
My mom always wanted a handmade quilt. So, I bought a Quilt In A Day book (log cabin) and went to work (secretly in the furnace room in the basement). I did not get it totally finished in time for Christmas. Which, in hindsight, was a blessing b/c my grandparents helped my mom and I put the top to the batting and backing and tie the quilt. That was, oh, 24 or so years ago!
