Hand Pieced Quilt-A-Long Block # 5 Granny Square

(I apologize for the poor picture quality it's a dark and dreary day here today!)

It's probably no big surprise that I chose a Granny Square for our block this week. They are simple and fun to sew. After the Bear's Paw block last week I think this will be a nice change.

You will need 25 ~ 1 7/8 inch squares. 
You can layout the block any way you like. I chose to use 3 colors and a white background.  

I sew my blocks into rows like this (on point). Then when I sew my rows together I just alternate the pressing directions. First row to the left, second row to the right etc...

Once sewn together you will trim your square up to 6.5 inches. Leaving 1/4 inch from your points to the edge of the block. This method does have waste but I didn't want to fiddle with set in triangles this week. 

Here are all of the blocks together so far. I really love all of them together.

    I'm admiring your Hope Valley Flying geese blocks and trying to decide what to make w/my own Hope fabrics. Are those large 1/2 square triangles to make the blocks? All your WIPs are lovely!

      Thank you! They are 3.5 x 6.5 inch(unfinished)flying geese blocks with a 3.5 x 6.5 inch background piece sewn to each flying geese block. Hope that helps!

    Really? That many pieces? ha! I haven't quite finished the bear's paw block yet, but will get this one cut out, too. {sigh}

    Oh no you had to do it, I've been trying to avoid this block. I don't want to get hooked like everyone else. I have enough WIPs.

    I too have tried to avoid this block for fear of joining in the granny craze. Hopefully this block will be enough for me. Although my mind is already wondering to my stash and wondering if I should make a whole granny quilt. So many wonderful projects out there so little time. I am still finishing up my bear paw. Hopefully I can get caught up this week.

    I love the granny squares I made orange 2 days ago and purple last night have some green and a few other colors to do over this weekend.

    You did have to do it - all your granny squares are so pretty anyway. Love the fabric choice on this one as well. You didn't get me hooked - I was already. I feel for the ones who have resisted!

    I am SO happy I found your blog. I am going to get started on your hand sewn blocks projects this afternoon. What fabric line are you using in your samples? It is very pretty. I pinned the photo of the three blocks on the line to pinterest this morning and it has already been repinned in just a few short hours by several individuals!

    Hi Erin! I have a question about this granny square (so cute by the way!) Could you do this from strip sets since you chose 4 colors? I realize you are doing hand piecing & sewing, but if I wanted to save time (& have a # of quilts on my "bucket list") could I accomplish this block through strip sets? Your blocks are beautiful & the colors are just wonderful! Congrats!

      you sure could! i think that if you are strip piecing while hand sewing you need to back stitch often. If you are using a machine, Katy has a nice tutorial here...http://imagingermonkey.blogspot.com/2012/03/strip-piecing-granny-square-block.html . I am making a strip pieced granny squares quilt right now, blocks go together in no time. Love it! Thanks Meredith!!

    p.s. Your bear paw is so cute! I've never been a fan of this block until now! You're making me want to do this one now, well all of them actually! My 1st quilt class was a hand pieced/hand quilted sampler class & I loved it!

    Woohooo I'm so excited! Ok, so now after flip flopping 4 times, I "think" this is the quilt I will make for my niece, cute & scrappy & all kinds of girly!! Thanks a bunch Erin :)
