Using Forgotten Quilt Blocks and Quilt Size Question

I pulled out my bag of miscellaneous quilt blocks today to sort through them because I want to make a few small quilts for my midwife to give to her clients. I found some great blocks and it makes me want to really use up my leftover blocks and scraps. These blocks are from Crazy Mom Quilts 36 patch along. I thought I might start with them for the first quilt. My question is ... What size is a good size for a baby quilt? I don't really know that I would need to make them crib sized, just stroller size or something along those lines. But what do you think? Is it not worth making them if they aren't very big? I was thinking maybe something just a bit bigger than the size of a receiving blanket. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!!!

  1. I would think anything 36x42 or a bit bigger would be a great size for stroller/car/floor play quilt. What a lovely idea!

  2. I think a 36" square works well in the stroller or laying on the floor for tummy time. Obviously you might want it a little bigger when it comes time to tuck it into the sides of a crib when she is a toddler but I think 36" or so is good till then because it doesn't drag on the ground when you are pushing the stroller, etc.

  3. For baby quilts, I try not to make anything smaller than 36"x36", though I tend to go with "Bigger is better" when it comes to quilts. But 36" square is my minimum.

  4. All good advice. I would approach it from the most convenient size to back it. If you make your quilt 36 x 36 you will need about 1 1/4 yds to back it. If you make it just a tad shorter and wider you could get it out of 1 yd. i'd shoot for something no bigger than 40 x 34.

  5. Personally I love car seat quilts and receiving blanket size quilts. Short and sweet.

  6. I like to make a width of fabric squared... It makes backing REALLY easy, and the size is big enough to be really useful and small enough for a little one to fall in love and "lug around". (It's 1 1/2 yards...) I also make lovely "receiving" blankets of double flannel of the same size! They are really useful as blankets, soft towels, or play mats! What a sweet idea, to share your lovely quilts!

  7. I make all my baby quilts somewhere in the range of 30-36" by 38-45". This is big enough for a playmat or to look pretty hanging over a crib rail.

  8. I make some tiny ones, like oversized doll quilts, they are really useful for in the pram / carseat as you don't need to fold them up and risk baby overheating or them managing to pull them over their face if tucked in snug, then as they grow they can drag them round as security blankets or use for their toys. I've used mine loads and my 4 year old still likes his on his lap in the car, and it doesn't get as mucky as the big ones with dirty shoes etc, and is so easy to chuck in the wash. They are also a good size as gifts as you can give big sister and baby exactly the same, but for different uses, as I find kids always get jealous if they don't get the same!

  9. Hi Erin! I like car seat quilts. About 30 inches square or so. Big enough, but not so big that there is too much left over to drag. Have fun ; )

  10. Good early morning to you from cold South Carolina. I always make my baby quilts & blankets an even yard of fabric...So 45 x 36 it is for me....But they can be as big or as small as you like. I know everyone always says my blankets are very generous in size. Big enough for crib or floor or for what ever...

  11. I have donated and gifted several baby quilts over the last 12 months. Everyone seems to love 36" x 40" because it is the perfect size for a car, taking somewhere, and for the child to cart around with them later. Large quilts have their place, but small ones do also. Good luck!

  12. I like 36"x36". It fits on the infant carrier without having too much to drag. When baby is older (like my 2yo) it is a managable size in Church ;)

  13. I agree with Becca. My DD just had a baby and I made her a sm. blanket. It is about 15x20 ish. It fits just right over the baby in his car seat and his "jumper". It isn't to long to drag and you don't have to worry about Tucking it in. If you are going to "wrap" the baby is a blanket then I would do one that is about 36x36. Keeping it inside of the one yard measurements. Like a couple of others said , keep it simple. This is such a nice idea to do. Might just have to come up with something to do for my daughter to give to her Midwife/Doula (sp).
Thanks!!! OH and your blocks are great

  14. I make my baby quilts 36" square because I think they are easier to deal with than rectangular quilts for babes

  15. We received a rectangular quilt for my son when he was in the NICU. They used them to cover the top of the isolettes. Then they let us pick our favorite to take home when he was well enough to leave. It was no larger than 36 X 36 - and probably less than 36 in one direction. But it was used a lot when we got him home. He lay on it on the floor, it covered him in the car seat, it was perfect for the stroller, and he dragged it around when he was a toddler. It was a lovely symbol of hope that brightened our NICU days, and I wish I knew the anonymous quilter that made it so I could send her/him a picture of my healthy, lively 12 year old.

  16. Thank you so much for putting this question and for the may replies you have received. You all have helped me along because I was never quite sure about the size for baby quilts. So thanks again and greetings from Germany
