Good Morning! Today I'm celebrating the anniversary of the lovely Lori Holt's book Great Granny Squared along with Lori and some of her quilty friends. For something extra fun we made projects that use the squares from the book but with a twist of some kind.
My Great Granny Squared project uses the "mama" block form Lori's book. I made 9 blocks using Nadra Ridgeway of Ellis & Higgs Bloom and Bliss fabric and an aqua solid I had in my stash. I can't remember the maker, sorry about that.
For the "twist" part I decided to crochet a granny stitch around all of the blocks and then connect them with a granny stitch. I turned it into a pillow because I actually need some new pillows. Mine are tired, haha. I love pom-poms on pillow edges so I decided to finally give that shot. I love how it turned out. The tutorial I used for the pom-poms is HERE. I'm not sure that I did them exactly right but I think they turned out pom-pomish :)
The back of the pillow is envelope style and all I did was press the top and side edges in 1/4 inch to get a finished edge and sew it to the back of the crocheted edge wrong sides together. I stitched it down with a fat 1/8 inch seam. Things get a little squooshy sewing to the yarn but it does sew down very securely. I made a pillow form to fit it. It's about 18 x 18 inches.
I love it! I can't wait to make another!
If you would like to have Lori's book Great Granny Squared and make some of the fun projects in it or put your own twist on them you're in luck! I have a copy of the book to send to one of you lovelies thanks to Fat Quarter Shop! Just leave a comment below. I'll pick a winner next week.
Then be sure to check out the other quilty friends celebrating with Lori and the twist they put on their Great Granny projects!

I love the blend of crochet and quilt blocks-- such a great idea! And the pom pom trim is the perfect touch! Thanks! Sarah: crjandsbj(at)netzero(dot)com
Granny everything!
What a delightful combination, Erin! Those fabric grannies mix beautifully with crochet and I adore your pom pom trim (have yet to try crocheting them, but your pictures make me want to drop everything else I'm doing and dive right in! ;o). Love those pretty granny squares, so that pillow is a keeper! Thanks for the inspiration and eye candy.

What a nice idea. Your cushion looks great. I'd like to try that. I'm in the uk and know posting a book is expensive so don't include me in your giveaway if it's not open to us lot!

Oh my gosh... you are so clever! I wish I knew how to crochet!
I'm guessing the postage to Australia will preclude me from winning, but if I was lucky enough to be chosen, I'd more than happily pay the postage myself! I love your cushion- the combination of patchwork and crochet works so well with this design! So original!

I don't have this book! Great timing with Christmas just ahead. I would love to try a granny block!
I really like your pillow. Very nice.
Your pillow is FABULOUS! I just love the crochet sashing on it. I'm a child/teenager of the 70s and granny square crochet was HUGE then. I have at least two afghans still made in that style, one from my grandmother, and one from my mom. Thanks for the chance to win this fabulous prize. I've been drooling over it for quite a while now.
What an amazing pillow!! You did an incredible job of marrying the quilt squares with the crocheting!! Perfection!!!
Your cushion cover is just so gorgeous. Count me in thank you.
Your cushion is gorgeous! Looks like a super book. Please count me in the Giveaway.
This pillow is just a delightful and vintage genius! Im already hunting for my crochet hooks and yarn to make a few of them, cuz one won't cover all the cute patterns in Lori's glorious book! Thank you so much for sharing the pattern, and the little trip back in time 😊
That's a great twist!
Great vintage look to this project. It reminds me of a kit purse my mom made in the 70's.
I love your idea! I would love to win the book, so I can make a few of my own. Beautiful!
We all love granny squares! These book would be great!

Fantastic book! Thanks for the chance to win a copy.
Your pillow is soooo cute! Thanks for the giveaway!!
One of the things that I enjoy about your work, is your use of crochet. It challenges how crochet is used. I love how you combine it with quilting - so unexpected.
