Quilting, Quilting, Quilting

I finished quilting the Granny Squares quilt for my friends wedding gift. I was so indecisive about the quilting on this one. At first I was going to quilt fans and include some hand quilting but couldn't find the right template for the fans and I was nervous about marking on the top.

Then I decided to do some free motion loopy quilting. I didn't like that at all.

Then I started hand quilting around the squares. I really liked the way it looked but I was having some puckering / poofing issues. After asking the opinion of my family they agreed that I should stick with the old favorite. So I picked all of the hand quilting and machine quilting out and settled on stippling. I guess that's a little boring but I know that it usually turns out great and it did! I do plan on hand quilting the other Granny Squares quilt I am making though. Now I just have to bind, wash and dry this one!!!

I also made 2 blocks for April for the Believe circle of do. good stitches. They were to be made with cool colors, blues, greens, purples and some kind of grey solid for the center and background. The tutorial can be found here. They were pretty fun to make. I'm looking forward to seeing the quilt that will be made with them.

That's all the sewing I have for this week. Hope y'all are having a great week and getting some sewing time!

  1. It turned out beautifully! What a pain to do all that unpicking, though. Yikes!

  2. It looks great! I always struggle with the quilting design too, and there's so much "negativity" about stippling. But when I make a gift (a baby quilt, for example) and stipple it, the recipients are so impressed with the quilting design. It really is pretty so I don't know why we apologize for defaulting to the stipple.

  8. Your quilt turned out lovely! I love the look of stippling, but I am a hand quilter and I don't think I will try hand stippling!
I am new to your blog. I've used one of your tutorials for a bag. Thanks for offering them!

  12. I like stippling, it always looks great and is very practical for quilts which will get alot of wear and washing. I'd be over the moon to get this quilt as a gift. It is lovely.

  13. I always love what stippling does for a quilt.....lovely crinklies! Your quilt is just beautiful!

  14. I think I am the stippling queen, because that is all I ever do. I am just not creative enough or brave enough for anything else. I even stipple in the large places in my hand quilting. But as far as the crinkles go, the more the better. We call it "shadow kiss" in the promise stitch world, and it adds to the beauty of the quilt. The more shadow kiss the better. Your quilt is beautiful.

  17. Your quilt is gorgeous as always! I hope someday to be able to make such a beautiful gift. I so admire your dedication...doing those time consuming hand stitches (which I thought looked great!) then ripping them out. That would have caused me to set it aside for awhile.
I downloaded the pattern for the circles, but after looking it over, realized the point accuracy needed here. :P
Not sure I'm ready for this but look forward to the day when I will be able do these things with confidence.

  20. I took a Free Motion class and it was the hardest thing I ever tried to do and I've been sewing for 45 years. Love your blog and would feel an honor to have you and your friends to join me as I'm rather new. www.sewcraftykathy.blogspot.com
